On the fifth competition day of the European Weightlifting Championships underway in Batumi, the Georgian team secured medals of all three standards in the men’s 88 kg weight category. Our team was successful in the snatch, the clean and jerk, and in the total.
The competition started successfully for the Georgian team. Manuchar Gogokhia lifted 166 kg in the snatch, achieving a career-best result and winning a bronze medal.
Zurab Mskhaladze also competed in the same weight category. The Georgian weightlifter lifted 163 kg, which was enough for fifth place; however, the corresponding kilograms in the total still left him with a strong prospect of winning a medal.
Members of the Georgian team aimed to improve their positions in the clean and jerk. For Gogokhia, only his first attempt was successful, where he lifted 192 kg and placed 9th in that discipline, finishing 4th overall in the total.
Mskhaladze performed significantly better. He compensated for missing out on the top three in the snatch by excelling in the clean and jerk and the total. The Georgian athlete lifted 200 kg in the clean and jerk, a result unreachable for others. Mskhaladze also became a medalist in the total with 363 kg, which allowed him to step onto the second place of the podium.
The title was won by Moldovan weightlifter Marin Robu, who totaled 373 kg. The bronze medal was earned by Bosnian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan, who finished with a total of 361 kg.
