The Brief Survey of the History of Weightlifting Development in Georgia

The weightlifting history in Georgia at the very beginning has been related to the George Chikvaidze's name. In twenties, after the graduation from University in Kiev, Mr. Chikvaidze returned in Georgia as the world recordsman (he lifted 60 kg., his own weight).He began his activity in the Committee of Sport and Physical Culture, worked hard and spent all his strength for weightlifting development in Georgia. Mr. George Chikvaidze in his late years worked in the Physical Culture Institute.

Mr. George Chikvaidze's activity was continued by his successor Konstantine Zautashvili. In 40s and 50s he was the chairman of Weightlifting Federation. At the same time worked in Tbilisi State University and was awarded by International Category of Honest Referee.

In 1972-76s Weightlifting Federation was headed by Mr. Duglas Nikuradze, the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture.

In 1976-80s Mr. Duglas Nikuradze left his position for Mr. Shota Buadze, the tutor of Physical Culture Institute of Georgia. The Candidate of Educational Science, he had been leading Theory Department for 8 years and still runs his vice-presidency in the Weightlifting Federation.

In 1980-84s, by the recommendation of the Sport State Committee, Mr. Guram Loladze, the government official, took his place as a chairman of the Federation.

The famous athlete in the past Iuri Kartvelishvili headed the presidency in 1987. Nowadays, he works as a Deputy Director of the Metalurgy Research Institute.In 1993 being on the post of vice-president, Mr. Ramaz Gurgenidze followed Mr. Iuri Kartvelishvili at the head of the Federation. He was the senior coach of the National Weightlifting Team and awarded the status of Honor Coach of Georgia.

In Feb.1 2002 Mr. Gurgenidze left his presidency and was appointed on the first vice-president's position.

In Feb.1 2002 Mr. David Bezhuashvili, P.M. of Georgia and successful businessman took the presidency of Federation.

The National Weightlifting Federation was founded in 1991 and since 1993 is a full member of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
